HOT WATER WASHING
Hot water washing has been
undertaken using tank cleaning machines in oil tankers for 30 years. The technique is also
used for washing chemical tankers and other tanks containing oil and grease based
materials.
Experience has shown that the water used should be as hot as possible
and that there is little chance of the process being effective unless the temperature is
greater than 60C. Water at a lower temperature will obviously have some effect, but more
cycles are required to complete the cleaning process.
Machines supplied by Marex Marine
Services are specially designed to be capable of cycling water plus any impurities which
may exist within the liquid. When hot water washing is being carried out this allows a
single charge of hot water to be cycled from tank to tank collecting impurities as it
goes. This technique reduces the total quantity of water required for the operation, and
obviously the total amount of dirty water for disposal after the cleaning operation is
complete.
